What You Should Know About Melasma During Pregnancy

What Is Melasma?
Melasma is a skin condition where the pigment-producing cells in your body called melanocytes produce more pigment than usual. The most common areas where skin darkening occurs during pregnancy are on the cheeks, forehead, chin, or around the mouth. Melasma is extremely common, and it is estimated that anywhere between 50-70% of all pregnant women will experience some form of melasma during their pregnancy. The good news is that melasma does not impact babies, nor does it affect women's health. It is purely a cosmetic concern that may look unsightly, but it has no adverse health effects.

Why Does Melasma Occur During Pregnancy?
Women undergo hormonal changes during pregnancy. Excessive levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone can trigger the production of more pigmentation in the skin than usual. This leads to the dark patches of skin that are known as melasma. It is essential to point out that melasma can occur all over the body during pregnancy and not just on the face. Melasma typically occurs during the second or third trimesters, but it can also happen at any time during pregnancy.

Can Anything Else Cause Melasma During Pregnancy Or Make It Worse?
Hormones are the primary culprit behind melasma during pregnancy. Some things can exacerbate or make the melasma worse, though. Excessive sun exposure can worsen melasma. This is because sun exposure naturally triggers the production of more pigment. Certain skincare products such as creams, lotions, and scrubs can also worsen melasma. Limiting sun exposure, wearing sunscreen when out in the sun, and using skincare products that are non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, and designed for sensitive skin can help prevent or reduce melasma during pregnancy. Melasma Treatment
