Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) FAQs

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) Therapy is the process of drawing a person's blood and running it through a centrifuge machine that works to separate the blood into various components. One of those substances is platelet-rich plasma. Platelets are full of growth factors that are crucial for the body's healing process. The method of centrifuging the blood allows the platelets to concentrate in high numbers and are then injected into the injured sites such as tendons, joints, muscles, and other musculoskeletal ailments. Thus, the patient is able to heal faster using their own blood. Below you'll find common questions and answers about PRP therapy:

When Was PRP Introduced to The Medical World?

Hematologists created PRP in the 1970s to treat patients for thrombocytopenia. It was initially described for clinical use in the year 1999 to improve osseointegration for tooth implants. It is now commonly used in wound care and surgical applications. There are several studies that confirm its effectiveness in musculoskeletal injuries.

Are There Risks Involved in Using Blood Products?

No, PRP therapy is completely safe because it uses your own blood, therefore there are no risks for blood transfusion complications or infections.

How Long Does The Therapy Last?

After an initial PRP consultation at Medical Aesthetic Center, which determines if you are a good candidate for the therapy, we will start the treatment process. The process generally lasts approximately 45 minutes to one hour.

What Conditions Improve With PRP Therapy?

Most of our patients come in for musculoskeletal injuries and chronic conditions such as tendonitis, ligament tears or sprains, muscle or tendon tears, cartilage degeneration, arthritis, and others. PRP is also used to help patients regrow hair as in the case of those suffering from hair loss.

How Many PRP Treatments Will I Need?

Depending on the extent of the injury or condition, meaning how severe it is and/or how long it has been present, you will most likely need anywhere from one to three treatments. For hair restoration, typically 3 treatments are needed to be followed up by maintenance appointments. During your initial consultation, our clinicians at Medical Aesthetic Center will explain what to expect from the therapy.

How Long Does It Take To See Results?

Most of our patients who do their PRP therapy treatments at the Medical Aesthetic Center have reported significant improvement in their conditions anywhere from one to three months. Each individual is unique and has a different healing process.
