Exploring the Many Benefits of Hormone Therapy

Hormone therapy encompasses a variety of different medical treatments that modulate the levels of hormones in a patient's body. Two common types of hormone therapy are hormone replacement therapy and systemic hormone therapy.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a type of hormone therapy used for treating menopause. During menopause women may suffer from menopausal symptoms, such as irregular bleeding, irritability and mood swings. Hormone replacement therapy can lessen suffering by offsetting naturally lowering levels of estrogen during and after menopause. Estrogen and progesterone may be used as hormone therapy in New Jersey and treating menopausal symptoms.

Systemic hormone therapy is considered the most effective treatment for menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes. Systemic hormone therapy may involve pills, skin patches, sprays or topical creams. In this type of therapy, one will take, for instance, a pill that contains estrogen or progestin. Taking estrogen as part of systemic hormone therapy may provide relief for vaginal symptoms associated with menopause, such as dryness and painful intercourse.

Hormone therapy may be recommend for certain kinds of cancers, such as breast cancer commonly affecting women or prostate cancer affecting men. Androgen deprivation therapy can help reduce the levels of androgens, like testosterone, for men battling prostate cancer of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), whereas estrogen deprivation therapy may be a recommended treatment option for women battling estrogen-positive breast cancer in particular.

Hormone therapy is also be used as part of gender transitioning. There are both masculinizing hormone therapies and feminizing hormone therapies for those seeking to transition to their desired gender identity. Conversely, hormone therapy may be advised in intersex conditions, in which an individual is born without the sexual organs or secondary sex characteristics needed for fitting into common definitions of female or male bodies. Many intersex individuals seek out hormone replacement therapy as a way to achieve more preferable sex characteristics.
