Are Botox And Fillers Safe During Pregnancy?

Salons and dermatologists are bombarded with questions from pregnant women who would like to avoid wrinkles and facial aging during pregnancy. Most physicians have said that Botox, radiofrequency treatments, laser hair treatments, and other cosmetic procedures will not harm the fetus, but some remain skeptical.

What are Botox and Fillers?
Botox (botulinum toxin A) is a prescription for Botulinum Toxin Type A that works to remove wrinkles by paralyzing the muscles in the treated area, reducing their ability to contract. This temporary result can last from three to six months and vary from person to person.

Fillers use hyaluronic acid to fill deeper wrinkles by plumping the area with a filler material that can last from four months to a year, depending on the type of filler.

What's the Difference?
With Botox, the substance is injected into the muscle, while with fillers, it is injected into the dermis — the top layer of skin. In both cases, the toxin paralyzes the muscles that cause wrinkles.

What to Expect from Botox and Fillers?
Botox may show up on the face as an acceptable blemish, gradually fading away. Fillers may also cause mild swelling, redness, and bruising at the injection site.

If Botox is injected into large muscles, tiny bleeding vessels can appear in the skin around them. These are usually carefully concealed with make-up for the rest of the day.

Are Botox And Fillers Safe During Pregnancy? Why?
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), no evidence injecting Botox or other fillers into any body area, including the face and neck, during pregnancy can cause fetal harm. There are no studies to date that show otherwise. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that these treatments can be performed during pregnancy without affecting fetal development.

Injecting Botox or Fillers into the face and neck is safe for your baby throughout pregnancy. Since all fillers and Botox are created differently, you should ask your physician what is best for you.
